European Connection Elsa's grandsire was Marienburg's Dark Daimler (pictured below) bred by Mary Rogers and sired by Ch. Marienburg's Morocco (out of Dolly v. Franckenhjorst) and out of Int. Ch. Qalina van de Donken bred by Karinne Janssens. Our beautiful Elsa: Qalina's sire was the famous Int. Ch. Graaf Quirinus v. Neerlands Stam. Graaf's mother was the very famous bitch that Sonja bred named Ch. Dea Doloris v. Franckenhorst: Dea was sister to Dexter V.Franckenhorst, the male that Mary Rogers imported to the U.S.
Marienburg Dark Daimler Elsa's dam was sired by Int. Ch. Graaf Quirinus v. Neerlands Stam (above small photo on the upper right), and her dam was sired by Int Ch. Lorenzo Macho V. H. Wantij. This pedigree reflects Sonja's breeding philosophy. "My breeding has been influenced by Herr Ernst Wilking, the great breeder of Germany in the 60's and early 70's. Linebreeding is the way I keep up my line. My idea of selecting a stud dog is to fit the male's with the bitch's pedigree, not the show careers. What the male looks like as an individual is also important." Sonja told me many times that whenever she had a litter, she kept the best for herself no matter how much she was offered for the pick puppy. When the German breeders found themselves in a box after selling so many of their good dogs out of the country, they came back to Sonja for their breeding stock. She was very proud that she could accommodate them. So Elsa's pedigree was literally a who's-who of fine European Dobermanns as it turned out. I congratulated myself for going to the shows, doing my homework and finding Sonja and Hugo. And I cannot say enough for Elsa's wonderfulcharacter. She was truly our heart dog, and she had the sense and judgement of a wise old soul even as a young puppy. She was hardly ever on a leash in her life and never strayed more than 15 feet from us. Elsa was a home bitch who was never more than a arm's length away. She was was oversized by European breed standard, so we never showed her. She repatriated with us to the U.S. in 1998 and later had a battle with osteosarcoma at age 7 and had to be put down after a week in hopsice care at the University of Georgia's Veterinary School. She was also diagnosed with Dilated Cardiomyopathy, and also had to be on thyroid meds since she was less than 1 year old. A stoic through it all, she was the bravest, sweetest, kindest and most wise being I had ever met. We were truly blessed to have owned this bitch, and I will forever testify for the character and reliability of the European dobermann. Elsa never so much as raised a lip at anyone in her life. She is shown below after cancer began to devastate her rear legs. Click here to read the full story of the Famous Von Frankenhorst Kennel
Sonja's stud dog at the time was Marienburg Dark Daimler pictured above; and he was there at her home along with some of her lovely bitches. One bitch sat on the sofa behind Sonja's back, and she pressed her head, face downwards, between Sonja's shoulders. While we had coffee and cake, Sonja and her husband Hugo told me stories and showed me home movies of their wonderful Dobermanns. I was in heaven! I knew immediately these were lovers of Dobermanns; the kind of dedicated breeders who were bound to leave their mark on the breed. It surely was my honor to have met them and spent time with them.
The following is an excerpt from an article http://www.dobermannreview.co.yu/default.php in The Dobermann Review entitled "the History of Frankenhorst Kennels" by Barbara Bordas Edina. "In 1984, the remarkable "D" litter was born (sire: Arrow v. Harro's Berg, dam: Vivre Vivien. Arrow's mother Vitesse is a sister of Vivien). The litter had Dexter, who went to the Marienburg's kennel in the US and produced more than 50 champion descendants. The litter also included his sister Dolly, and above all Bundessiegerin Dea Dolores. She went to the v. Neerlands Stam kennel where she gave birth to Graaf Quirinus v Neerlands Stam. Quirinus produced a great number of award winning puppies and became the most popular bitch of the 90's. The puppy of his brother Graaf Quinto was Gravin Wanda v. Neerlands Stam, also a world winner." Back to Our History page |
