At Demira Dobermans, we feel that Health and Temperament considerations are a priority, whether the doberman is a family pet, show dog or working dog. The following are the tests that we use to screen for disease in our breeding stock.

  1. Heart Disease
    1. Cardiac ultrasound
    2. Holter ECG (24 hour) provided by University of Georgia Veterinary School
    3. DNA screening for Meur's mutation by North Carolina State University (this test relates to Dilated Cardio myopathy in the Doberman).
    4. Von Willenbrand's Disease (a bleeding disorder) DNA screening provided by VetGen in Ann Arbor, Michigan

    Eyes:
    1. Canine Eye Registration Certification (CERF)

    Hips:
    1. Hip xray or penn hip evaluation with results  in the normal range

    Thyroid:
    1. Thyroid certification for test results in the normal range
Our breeding dobermans have passed all of the above evaluations and been cleared of the associated diseases. We are happy to announce that Grand Champion Demira Far and Away of Adamas (Tattoo) is NEGATIVE for the mutation that is associated with the onset of Dilated Cardio Myopathy in the Doberman, which currently affects approximately 60% of the doberman population. And his dam, our foundation bitch, Champion Van Orman's Vanity of Demira, is also NEGATIVE for the mutation. These tests have been performed at Washington State University under the supervision of Dr. Kate Meurs. News: The two Tattoo puppies that were shown and won their respective classes at the Doberman Pinscher Club of America's National Specialty in Massachusetts in October, 2011 have just received their DCM mutation results. They are both negative for the mutation! They are: Kaliber's Tennessee Waltz (Page) and Kaliber's Unforgettable (Cole). Please note: There are still other reasons for heart disease in the Doberman that fall outside of the scope of this dna screening.
